Potential Consequences

If you move or are visiting someone for more than seven days, you must report yourself as a registered sex offender to local officials. They will take a picture of you and collect general information (name, date of birth, social security number, etc.), as well as general information about the alleged offense (age of the child, date that it happened, nature of the crime, etc.).

The frequency for which you will have to report depends on the level of the violation. It is important to note that if you plea to any crime or the court sentences you as the result of any conviction, that conviction may have registration requirements attached to it. In Texas, complying with registration requirements can be complicated. If you do not register as required according to sentencing, you can be charged with failure to register as a sex offender.

1st-Degree Felony: 5-years to 99-years in prison and up to a $10,000 fine.
